What is Washington Mediation?
Marriage dissolution mediation services offer an alternative to the expense, emotional stress, and uncertainty of divorce court litigation proceedings. A professional mediator acts as a neutral third party for divorcing couples who may, or may not, have their own lawyer or other professionals present at the sessions. During one or more mediation sessions, the mediator listens attentively to the needs and concerns of both parties, in order to resolve key issues that may arise between them. At the completion of the process, the mediator presents a proposed settlement agreement that is legally binding for both parties, once accepted and signed. The cost of the mediation services is generally shared by both parties, but may be part of the final proposed settlement. Generally, a professional mediator will be an experienced, licensed family law attorney. Currently, the Washington State Bar Association does not award special certification for divorce mediation professionals. You must be careful when selecting a mediator. Finding a professional with the experience and credentials to assist you is vital.
